I ACTUALLY HAVE the book on my desk and I’ve always wanted to see the flight of the gold dragon, so this is pretty sweet if you ask me. The illustrations in this book are incredible, and this brings back a lot of good memories xD

I Like Very Interesting People

wattpad:

Wattpad brings you a guest post from CelticRose on her top 5 villains in fiction. Read her vampire series ”The Faustine Chronicles” free on Wattpad:

Set in a fractured world of living vampires, fallen angels and psychopathic faeries, this dark fantasy novel explores the depths of love and vengeance, and what happens when the villain gets the girl.

Face it. Nine times out of ten the villain steals the show. Whether it’s the witty one-liners, the charisma, suavity and charm or the tragic back-story that jolts you into feeling sympathetic or even empathising with them, it’s the villains that make a cracking story. After all, what would a story be without conflict? And how would the hero develop without a strong antagonist to push back?

My love of villains and all things… villainous … began as soon as I was introduced to Disney. What has Aurora got that Maleficent can’t beat? Seriously. That woman has class, style, an amazing hat, and turns herself into a dragon. When I discovered that Angelina Jolie will be playing her in her very own movie, aptly named Maleficent, (out 2014), I was beyond excited.

The evil fairy Maleficent is pretty much the epitome of a successful villain: she’s interesting, memorable, and has cheekbones you could cut your sandwiches with. She also has real emotions (it hurts to be the only one not invited to a party… how would you like it?) and without her, Sleeping Beauty would have been a bit of a snooze-fest. [See what I did there?!]

My novel, The Book of Fate, first in a planned quadrilogy, revolves around a very simple premise: what if the villain got the girl? … How many different ways could a classic hero story end if that was the case? The best thing about a premise like that is that you could write it a hundred different ways, and it would come out differently each time. Why on earth The Book of Fate ended up the way it did is anybody’s guess, but I blame my various twisted influences, of whom Alan Rickman was probably the strongest…!

Vilnius

When she had woken up that morning she had no idea that, later in the evening, the only thing on her mind would be Vilnius. Actually, she had had very weird dream about one of her favourite series; the two main characters, who she only saw as friends and never believed in a romantic relationship, were lovers. She played the part of the woman and she had been amused about this part when she was introducing him to her parents… as his lover. The smug smirk on the man’s face had been so funny, she had woken up smiling with amusement.

However, when afternoon came, something made her remember the city where she had lived for five months. Vilnius. She didn’t even know with certainty where Lithuania was when she had picked the country for her exchange program, but she had been sure to look it up in a map. It was far. Four thousand kilometres, according to the internet. Two hours later, when it came to time zones. A country with a history and a language so different from the ones she was used to.

With all this information she had gone there and returned with much more. In her luggage she had brought a coffee cup, notebooks, photographs and so much love for that city. Vilnius was beautiful. She had seen it in under the summer sun, beautiful, old, familiar yet different. The weather that welcomed her when she arrived to the airport was warm, much like the one she had left behind, and not cold and wet as she had expected.

For a month, she had known what summer was like in such a different city. She had found news roads to reach her university: across a small stretch of woods, where tiny daisy like flowers bloomed, crossing a bridge full of padlocks (which she had later found out were put there by couples on their wedding day and they threw the keys into the water afterwards), a brick church and little streets, with a couple of coffee shops.

And then autumn had taken over, but so slowly, one day she was walking to catch the bus on the Karaliaus Mindaugo stop, coming from Gedimino, and a sea of leaves covered the floor. She had almost tripped on an unseen object, as she dragged her feet on the golden carpet, and she and her new friend laughed, pulling their scarves closer to their necks. The days were growing darker as the weeks went by and the sun became scarce. As winter got closer and closer, she was used to three sunny days a month, but it didn’t matter. Something else had arrived and charmed her out of any gloominess the dark days could bring.

Snow. It was snowing regularly. She had already seen snow; both while it fell and static on the floor, but it was different to live with it. The first day it actually snowed, she had gone out with friends and they had covered the city streets on foot. They walked from one end of Gedimino prospektas to the other (the long avenue has almost two kilometres) and then back, playing in the snow, taking pictures and then found a good place to drink something hot. Kava su pienu still sounded right in her mouth when she wanted to ask for a coffee with milk. One of her friends liked arbata su pienu and on her last day there, they had made a bunch of silly rhymes with it. Never tea with milk had sounded like such a funny sentence.

The feelings of being there took over her as she decided to worsen the torture and sat on her computer and search the internet. Vilnius, Lithuania. Such beautiful photos.

Oh, I remember this place! I was here! I fell here! I crossed this street everyday to get to college! This place has the best chocolate milkshake I have ever had! Look! That fair that filled Gedimino on Sunday mornings! Forty four! That was the bus I had to catch to go from the centre to my dorm! And there…

This is what hexation looks like. Sometimes, anyhow.

Sometimes, it’s very small indeed. A bead rolling, writing in the dust as it goes. A crack under the heel, small enough to birth ants, which goes down all the way through the world’s tough, fibrous rind. Blood in the eye, rimming the cilia with a single broken vessel. A reflection in one lens of a man’s smoked-glass spectacles.

And sometimes it’s this: huge. Undeniable. The universe’s frail egg, breaking open. Birthing monsters.

OpenDyslexic is a free-to-use font that is designed to help those with dyslexia read better. The text is weighted, having a heavier bottom, which is thought to increase readability for dyslexic people. You can download it for free here.

I don’t have dyslexia myself, but in the event any of my followers do, I thought I’d share. Maybe it will help people.

I have mild dyslexia and it doesn’t affect my reading (mainly because of years of training and struggling with it; it still affects my writing, though) but I’m sure this can help most dyslexics.

prompts-and-pointers:

I can almost guarantee that Google thinks I’m a psychopath. My last three searches were “Is it possible to slit your own throat?” “Does ripping skin make a sound?” and “How long would it take for someone to bleed out through their forearm?”.

But I’m not insane, I promise.

This is off the Bermuda Triangle, where 16+ ships washed up on a sand bar. The mystery is still unsolved

Actually the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle has been given a scientific explanation: methane vents which have been discovered in that region.

Methane reduces the density of water, causing ships that would normally float, to instead sink.

Methane, when in gas form, messes with the electrical components of aircraft, causing them to fail and sometimes fall right out of the sky.

Methane also causes the water to turn a ghostly greenish color, and the “ghost ships” reported to be seen are simply green reflections of the ships that scatter the bottom of the triangle.

Fucking science, man.

Pendragon Shoes

Established in 1987, Pendragon is the designer shoemaking duo Jackie Orme Ward and Adrian Lockwood. Their vision? To create something extraordinary and unique; a quest to bring to life shoes you’d dreamt you might one day find; shoes to desire and delight… shoes to treasure.

They accept commissions from around the world and create exclusive limited edition collections, costume shoes, one off exhibition art pieces – all designed and personally hand made. Rare buttons, antique buckles, vintage and hand tooled leathers combine to create the distinct Pendragon signature. You won’t find these shoes anywhere else!

The Alnwick Poison Garden
Alnwick Castle, Northumberland, England

The Alnwick Poison Garden boasts some of the world’s most dangerous plants, hence the name. Behind big black gates, the carefully curated garden contains about 100 varieties illegal narcotics including poppies, which are used to make opium, the poisonous Atropa belladonna (also known as deadly nightshade), Strychnos nux-vomica (used to make strychnine), Coca (from which cocaine is produced), hemlock (used to kill Socrates), cannabis and more.

The current Duchess of Northumberland decided to revamp the gardens when she became mistress of Alnwick Castle. The project began around 2000, but she did not begin the Poison Garden until five years later. Inspired by the garden near Padua, Italy which was once used by the Medici’s to find better ways to kill their enemies, the Duchess decided to build a garden that was filled with narcotic, poisonous and deadly plants. The initial design included some medicinal plants, but she had them removed to maintain the concept of the Poison Garden.

Get your enemies blindly drunk, drop ‘em in the middle of this and pin a note to them that says “You’ll be fine, everything in here is edible, be back in 24 hours”.

WIFEY GET YOUR PURSE WE’RE GOING.

There was a short story I had to read in first-year English about this kind of place. About a man who fell in love with a girl who’d grown up in a poisonous garden. SHE could live there ok, but because she’d grown up with the garden, she’d become poisonous and ended up killing him. … or something like that.

Out of pure botanical fascination, it would be marvellous to visit this place.

We went a few years ago. Our tour guide was 3’10”. She said she had been six foot before working there.

Honest to God guys, if you ever get to go Northumberland go and see the Alnwick poison garden. It’s so interesting, you aren’t allowed in without a guide and there are some plants there that are so poisonous that they’re kept in cages. Honest to God cages. Which is even cooler when you find out that Alnwick castle was used as Hogwarts.

Plants in Cages feels very Potter-ish to me.
